Whale sharks in a tank

11 febrero 2007

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium holds 7,500-cubic meters of water and features the world's largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters. From 1980 to 1998, 16 whale sharks had been kept here and to this day 3 whale sharks are on exhibit.

According to Marine Conservation Society, the sharks were all captured around Okinawa Island by set-nets. The sharks were kept in the tank with the water temperature kept between 19.8 and 29.60C, matching environmental conditions during capture. Survival times ranged from as little as 3 days to the current record of nearly 10 years, dependant on their initial condition on arrival, as some animals had been injured during capture.

Here you can see some interesting videos and pictures from the aquarium:

  2. "between 19.8 to 29.60C" != "between 19.8 and 29.60C".

  12. Thank you for this amazing website! But these shark-whales in a tank are imho a very poor example of ignorance against nature. These majestic creatures normally spend their lives constantly travelling thousands of miles across the oceans. This tank is sized 22x8 metres?

  14. Ooops, i see it´s just one panel sized 22x8 metres... My english is pretty poor. But i think there are animals never belonging in any tank, among these are whales and of course whale-sharks. This is not amazing, it´s sad.

  18. I can handle seeing such large whale sharks in water, they are so great to watch. What I can't handle are snakes in water and Japanese scientists have made a robot snake that swims in water!!

  20. Yes, amazing pictures. Are all of them stolen, or just the second picture? That one is mine and you do not have permission to use it. Please remove it immediately.
